One of the most important challenges for any denomination, ministry, or congregation is to thoughtfully articulate the institution's governance. Depending upon the religious body, this is accomplished through well-crafted books of church order or discipline, constitutions, charters, canon law, declarations of trust, articles of incorporation, bylaws, and other organizing documents.

This seminar is ideal for denominational, ministry, and other religious institution executives and will cover topics including:

  • Defining the ecclesiastical entity and the civil entity that serves it.
  • Articulating doctrine and religious entity history into organizing documents.
  • Understanding the relationship between church law and civil law in church governance.
  • Resolving disputes and judicial administration within the religious body.
  • Relating the local congregation to the national body.
  • Segregating denominational and local church property for asset protection while permanently dedicating it to the denominational mission.
  • Avoiding the problem of consolidated financial statements.
  • Appreciating trust concepts important in property relationships.
  • Distinguishing between patrimonial and current assets.
  • Using organizing documents to help qualify for 501(c)(3) status, Title VII religious organization exemptions, religious worship property and sales tax exemptions, and church plan status.
  • Admitting, forming, and disciplining members and clergy.
