This scholarship program will provide an opportunity for a talented diverse second-year law student to receive $10,000 towards his or her third-year law school tuition upon completion of a paid clerkship with RJ&L during the second semester of the recipient's second year of law school. In addition to financial assistance, the scholarship program is designed to provide the recipient with a learning experience that will develop and enhance his or her legal writing skills and provide exposure to the private law firm environment and the real-world practice of law - thereby promoting the educational and professional development of the recipient.
The program is competitive; one recipient will be selected each year from either the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, or the University of Colorado School of Law. Candidates will be evaluated based on their law school and undergraduate academic records and performance, extracurricular activities, leadership attributes, work or real-world experiences, a written personal statement, and letter of recommendation.
Program Overview Eligibility: The scholarship will be awarded annually to a diverse second-year law student from either the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, or the University of Colorado School of Law.
Considerations: Application, resume, law school and undergraduate academic records (transcripts) and performance, leadership attributes, extracurricular activities, work or real-world experiences, written personal statement, letter of recommendation, and office interview.
Timing of Application Process: A cover letter,
completed application, resume, undergraduate transcript, law school transcript, written personal statement and one letter of recommendation must received at RJ&L by October 17. The cover letter and materials should be addressed to Deanna Viles, Rothgerber Johnson & Lyons, 1200 17th Street, Suite 3000, Denver, CO 80202. Top candidates meeting the stated criteria will be invited to a personal interview with RJ&L attorneys. RJ&L will select and notify the recipient by December 15.
Clerkship and Stipend: The scholarship recipient will start his or her clerkship in January on a mutually agreed-upon date. The individual will clerk at the firm for at least 10 and no more than 20 hours per week, for the entire Spring semester (or 12 weeks), and will receive a bi-weekly stipend during the term of the clerkship.
Scholarship: Upon completion of the clerkship, RJ&L will pay the $10,000 scholarship to the recipient's law school for his or her third-year of law school tuition. If the recipient fails to enroll or defers his/her third year of law school, the scholarship will be payable when the recipient ultimately enrolls, which must occur within two years of completing the RJ&L clerkship.
Offers of Employment: The purpose of this program is educational in nature and designed to foster the applicant's overall development. No offers of employment are guaranteed or promised. Nevertheless, candidates who are successful in the program may be considered for additional job opportunities with the firm, at the firm's discretion, on a case-by-case basis.
